Retro Gaming Revival: Capcom & Samsung Ignite Nostalgia in London

Look Sports Media – A nostalgic trip back to the golden age of gaming was recently experienced at the Capcom x Samsung event held at Samsung KX in London. This collaboration brought together the best of retro gaming and modern technology, celebrating the competitive spirit that fuels both gaming and esports communities.

Whether you cut your teeth on arcade classics, Sega, Atari, or Nintendo, or honed your skills on PC, Xbox, or PlayStation, the charm of retro games remains undeniable. From the iconic Lara Croft to the ever-round Mario, the pixelated aesthetic continues to resonate. Capcom and Samsung tapped into this enduring fondness, creating an event that revitalized the love for classic titles.

The heart of the event focused on fighting games, a genre with deep roots in the 1970s and 80s arcades. Capcom, the creators of the legendary Street Fighter franchise, invited UK fighting game community members and creators to experience their new Capcom Fighting Collection 2, a meticulously polished collection of classic fighting games from 1998-2004.

Attendees were quick to praise the accessibility of these retro titles. Rich "The Dragon," Capcom Europe’s Community & Esports Manager, highlighted the convenience: "That’s where it all started. It’s nice that publishers bring these old games back, so we don’t have to wrangle a PC and get a weird download or fix to play them—to have your old game available and being able to just start and get online is so nice."

The sentiment was echoed by content creator KiKi, who emphasized the communal aspect: "It’s nice to get to know the games that everyone else used to play back in the day—it reminds me of when you were young and it felt like all games looked like that."

Beyond simple nostalgia, the event embraced the competitive spirit inherent in gaming. Friendly matches and tournaments across various retro titles unfolded on large screens, inviting attendees to test their skills in a fun, pressure-free environment. "As much as we sometimes don’t like to admit it, we all love a bit of competition," Rich explained. "This is a fun environment, no money stakes, no egos, people can get up there and win nothing—it’s a nice, chill feeling."

The event also showcased Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny Remastered, a modernized version of the 2002 classic, demonstrating Capcom’s commitment to bridging the gap between retro and modern gaming.

The Capcom x Samsung event served as a powerful reminder of gaming’s core tenets – community and competition. As KiKi aptly summarized, "To have a sense of community is very important. It is so vital that all of us get to connect with each other." The event successfully blended the nostalgic charm of classic games with the vibrant energy of modern gaming culture, leaving attendees with a renewed appreciation for the timeless appeal of retro gaming.
