LoL’s Secret Weapon: New Player Feature Could Be a Game Changer

Look Sports Media – League of Legends, notorious for its steep learning curve, might finally get a much-needed boost for new players. While Riot Games’ recent Brawl mode offered a simplified entry point, a newly discovered feature on the Public Beta Environment (PBE) promises to revolutionize the onboarding experience. This update focuses on the champion selection process, adding video previews and intuitive tags to drastically improve player understanding.

Before a match begins, players can now hover over a champion to view a short video showcasing their abilities and playstyle. Clear tags like "crowd control," "mobile," and "sustained damage" provide quick insights into each champion’s kit. Furthermore, champions are categorized as "Beginner-friendly" (e.g., Ashe, Blitzcrank) or "Hard-to-play" (e.g., Irelia, Yasuo), offering valuable guidance to newcomers. Champions without these tags are presumably considered intermediate.

The enhancements don’t stop there. After selecting a champion, players can access a detailed abilities menu, complete with videos and text descriptions for each skill (passive, Q, W, E, and R). This pre-match resource provides a crucial refresher, particularly beneficial for ARAM players unfamiliar with their randomly assigned champion. While ARAM’s upcoming major update will mitigate this issue with champion cards, this feature remains a significant improvement.

Despite its potential to streamline the new player experience, the update has sparked some apprehension among veteran players. Concerns have been raised regarding the potential strain on the League of Legends client, known for its occasional sluggishness. Social media discussions have already called for an option to disable the feature, preventing potential crashes due to increased RAM usage.

Interestingly, this isn’t the only under-the-radar feature currently on the PBE. A previously unreported WASD movement control option, discovered about a month ago, remains hidden, with related files seemingly renamed to obscure its existence. Riot Games has yet to officially comment on either of these features, leaving their release date uncertain. The community eagerly awaits further updates from Riot regarding the implementation timeline and the potential for a toggle to disable the new champion preview feature.
