League of Legends: Riot Pulls the Plug on LTA Experiment!

Look Sports Media – Riot Games has officially addressed the swift demise of the League of Legends Championship of the Americas (LTA), a bold regional experiment that lasted a single year. The ambitious project, launched in 2024, sought to unify the Campeonato Brasileiro de League of Legends (CBLoL) and the North American League Championship Series (LCS) under a unified banner, fostering cross-conference competition.

The initial vision was to elevate the overall level of play and create higher-stakes matches by merging North and South American talent. However, the LTA faced a wave of criticism from the community, ultimately leading Riot Games to revert to the familiar structures of the CBLoL and LCS.

According to Riot’s official statement, the LTA provided "valuable learnings," but it became evident that fans deeply missed the regional pride and historical significance associated with their original leagues. "Regional pride and history are core to the League of Legends looksports.media experience, and our communities consistently told us they wanted their leagues back. Not just the LTA wearing the old brands, but a true restoration of the leagues," Riot explained.

The company emphasized that this isn’t simply a return to the past. They aim to build upon the positive aspects of the LTA, such as raising the bar for competition, fostering innovation, and improving pathways to professional play. "This isn’t just a return—it’s a step forward, built to make both leagues stronger for the future and more connected to the players, teams, and communities that define them," Riot stated.

Following the conclusion of Worlds 2025 in November, League of Legends will officially transition back to the LCS and CBLoL formats. Cross-regional playoffs will be eliminated, allowing each region to conduct its own season and crown its own champion.

The LTA in 2025 saw the creation of two conferences: LTA North and LTA South. FlyQuest emerged victorious in the LTA North Conference, defeating Cloud9 in June, after a quarter-final appearance at last year’s world championship. FlyQuest then went on to defeat Brazilian team Vivo Keyd Stars to claim the inaugural LTA Championship, with 100 Thieves joining them at LoL Worlds 2025.

Despite the high stakes, the cross-conference grand final only managed to attract 166,000 viewers, according to esports charts, a figure significantly lower than the peak viewership numbers previously achieved by the LCS or CBLoL individually. This ultimately underscored the community’s preference for the established regional identities and rivalries.
