Rocket League Devs Respond to #RocketLeagueIsDead Outcry

Look Sports Media – Psyonix and Epic Games have finally addressed the growing concerns surrounding Rocket League’s server stability after a barrage of Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks, issuing a statement detailing their efforts to combat the ongoing issues. The response comes after a vocal campaign led by former RLCS World Champion Axel "Vatira" Touret, who declared "#RocketLeagueIsDead" due to the persistent problems plaguing the game.

For over a year, Rocket League players, especially those in higher ranks, have been battling a surge of hackers and cheaters disrupting gameplay. Vatira’s frustration boiled over last week, prompting him to launch a Twitter campaign under the hashtag #RocketLeagueIsDead, a movement that quickly gained traction within the community.

Vatira, a prominent player for Karmine Corp, ignited a firestorm, urging the Rocket League community to demand immediate action to fix the game’s hacking vulnerabilities. He wasn’t alone in his criticism. Back in July, English pro Jack "ApparentlyJack" Benton also voiced his discontent with the developers’ handling of the situation.

The #RocketLeagueIsDead campaign quickly amassed support from prominent figures, including three-time RLCS World Champion Alexandre "Kaydop" Courant and French YouTuber Thomas "Laink" Iturralde, from the Wankil Studio YouTube channel with over 2.7 million subscribers.

Other high-profile players, like Vitality’s Alexis "zen" Bernier, expressed their frustration with the situation hindering their practice. "To be honest, I’m just tired of this game. We can’t even grind, and we have RLCS tomorrow! It’s good to release updates, but if the update is not working, you need to be more reactive to ban, is it that hard!?" zen stated on Twitter.

The situation reached a critical point when DDoS attacks began affecting RLCS LAN qualification matches, causing disconnections and forcing players into unfair situations. ApparentlyJack once again voiced his concerns, stating, "It’s a complete joke that we don’t have admins in top 16 matches, especially in a regional where direct LAN qualification matches are on the line."

Former RLCS World Champion Enzo "Seikoo" Grondein didn’t mince words, adding, "But let’s be honest, Rocket League, you guys are total idiots, everyone has deco/lag and we can’t do anything about it because you’re incompetent, even when it’s qualifiers for LANs."

In response to the outcry, Psyonix and Epic Games clarified that Rocket League servers have been targeted by two types of attacks: Denial of Service (DoS) and DDoS. They explained that while they had previously addressed DoS attacks by optimizing server code and implementing DDoS detection, attackers have since evolved their tactics.

"Attackers have evolved their tactics to new techniques, including the use of much bigger botnets. If previous attack methods were a drizzle, today’s attacks are a flood," the developers admitted in their statement.

Epic Games and Psyonix described the situation as a "cat and mouse" game, emphasizing their commitment to staying ahead of cheaters and their evolving methods. They claim to have expanded their server fleet and network capacity to handle larger attacks and are actively identifying attacks in real-time.

The developers assured the community that "Expanding our prevention and detection efforts is a top priority for us." They plan to continue banning cheaters and are working on ways to expedite the banning process and prevent attackers from creating alternate accounts.

Vatira responded to the statement with cautious optimism, urging the developers to maintain open communication and emphasizing the need for a lasting solution. "Communication is good, and you need to keep us updated about the situation. We will see if the solution you guys work on is going to work this time and not for just a few weeks/months like usual," he stated.

He also expressed gratitude to those who supported his campaign, adding, "By the way, thank you to all the people and communities for being so involved in this movement. We are still waiting for a real solution, and the best is yet to come. Keep letting them know we are not happy!"
