CS:GO Legend gla1ve Retires! Coaching Era Begins?

Look Sports Media – Lukas "gla1ve" Rossander, the mastermind behind Astralis’ unprecedented Counter-Strike dominance, has officially announced his retirement from professional play. The legendary in-game leader, celebrated for guiding Astralis to four Major championships, is setting his sights on a new challenge: transitioning into a Head Coach role.

The 30-year-old Danish tactician leaves behind a legacy etched in Counter-Strike history. Joining Astralis in 2016, gla1ve replaced Finn "karrigan" Andersen, injecting a new level of strategic depth into a roster brimming with individual talent. The team, formerly known as TSM and featuring stars like Peter "dupreeh" Rasmussen, Andreas "Xyp9x" Højsleth, and Nicolai "device" Reedtz, had struggled to convert potential into consistent tournament victories, often labeled as "chokers" by the community.

Under gla1ve’s astute leadership, Astralis evolved into an unstoppable force. His decisive calls, exemplified by the relentless A-site pushes at ELEAGUE Atlanta 2017, secured their first Major title. Recognizing the overwhelming crowd noise, gla1ve exploited the communication breakdown of Virtus.pro, leading his team to a dramatic comeback victory.

The addition of Emil "Magisk" Reif after Markus "Kjaerbye" Kjærbye’s departure completed the iconic "famous five," ushering in an era of unparalleled dominance. Astralis went on to claim the London FACEIT Major 2018, IEM Katowice 2019, and ELEAGUE Boston 2019, achieving a historic three consecutive Major wins.

At their peak, gla1ve orchestrated Astralis with masterful precision, creating a team that moved and reacted as a single, cohesive unit. Their ability to anticipate enemy movements, utilizing utility to control space and systematically dismantle opponents, became their trademark. Gla1ve himself was a proficient rifler, demonstrating clutch capabilities and an uncanny ability to read the game.

However, the disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, coupled with device’s departure to NiP, marked the beginning of Astralis’ decline. The "famous five" never had the opportunity to defend their title, and the team entered a prolonged period of instability. Despite roster changes and attempts to recapture their former glory, Astralis struggled to regain their competitive edge.

After being benched, gla1ve ventured to ENCE, where the team struggled to find consistency. However, a memorable victory at Elisa Masters Espoo 2024, highlighted by gla1ve’s exceptional performance in the grand final against Heroic, offered a glimpse of his enduring talent.

Following his benching from ENCE in July, gla1ve is now pursuing a career as a head coach. His tactical acumen and deep understanding of Counter-Strike make him a highly sought-after prospect, although success in this new role is far from guaranteed.

In his retirement statement, gla1ve expressed his excitement for the future:

"A new adventure begins! After some time away from the server and a chance to reflect on my future, nothing feels more right than to start the next chapter: becoming a head coach. I truly believe I have something extraordinary to offer in this role. My deep understanding of the game, recent experience as an IGL in CS2, and a deep and up to date understanding of the meta gives me a unique edge. I know exactly how to handle pressure on the biggest stages, and my holistic approach – seeing every player as an individual instead of forcing everyone into the same box – is something I’m convinced will unlock the next level for many talented players. What a ride it has been. So many memories, so many victories, and lessons I’ll carry with me forever. I still get goosebumps thinking about the Majors, the Intel Grand Slam, and everything we built during the golden Astralis era. To be part of creating something that special doesn’t happen often. A huge thank you to my incredible teammates and coaches from back then – you made it some of the best years of my life. To every fan who screamed in the arenas and cheered from home: you were the energy behind it all. Thank you for believing in me every single day. Big love to Astralis, ENCE, and every team and person I’ve crossed paths with over the years – you all shaped who I am today. And last but never least, thank you to my amazing family and my wonderful wife. Your support has been my biggest strength, and I can’t wait for what’s coming next with you by my side. See you on the server, but from the coach seat this time."
