Look Sports Media – This year’s main Magic: The Gathering (MTG) crossover event plunges players into the iconic world of Final Fantasy. Beloved characters from across the celebrated video game series are now immortalized on all-new cards for the popular tabletop game. This collaboration expands MTG’s Universes Beyond series, which has previously featured franchises like Marvel, Assassin’s Creed, Doctor Who, and Dungeons & Dragons, solidifying its position as a powerhouse in cross-media gaming.
Similar to last year’s highly successful The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth, this Final Fantasy set will be MTG’s flagship crossover event of 2024. Initially announced at MTG’s 30th Anniversary Panel at GenCon in Indianapolis, the hype surrounding the collaboration has been steadily building, with Wizards of the Coast aggressively promoting the release for the past month. Crucially, cards from this main set will be legal across all MTG formats, including the ever-popular Standard and Commander.

Beyond the core Final Fantasy set, MTG is releasing "Through the Ages" bonus cards. These feature Final Fantasy-themed art for existing MTG cards, offering a unique collectible experience for fans. Each Final Fantasy game is represented by four cards, resulting in a total of 64 "Through the Ages" cards to hunt. Collectors can also chase the adorable Travelling Chocobo, available in four colors (pink, green, yellow, and blue), with a special black Japanese-language version and an ultra-rare serialized golden Chocobo available in collector boosters.

The new set introduces three exciting mechanics: Tiered, allowing for strategic spell casting with variable costs and bonuses; Saga Creatures, permanent Saga cards dealing damage and offering passive benefits; and Job Select, a mechanic designed to ensure equipment has a suitable target. Returning MTG mechanics further enhance the gameplay experience.
The Final Fantasy cards are available in various formats catering to different player preferences and budgets. Play boosters (£8) offer a standard 14-card pack with one guaranteed Rare or Mythic card, while Collector Boosters (£30) provide 15 cards with a higher chance of Rare and Mythic cards, plus special variations. Pre-constructed decks, including a Starter Kit (£15.99) featuring Cloud vs. Sephiroth, provide an easy entry point for new players. Four Commander decks (£60 standard, £160 Collector’s Edition) are also available, each themed around a prominent Final Fantasy character. Finally, bundles such as the Gift Bundle (£65) offer a curated selection of boosters and other items.
This ambitious crossover promises to be a landmark event for both Magic: The Gathering and Final Fantasy fans, blending the strategic depth of MTG with the beloved characters and lore of one of gaming’s most iconic franchises. The diverse range of products ensures there’s something for every player, from casual enthusiasts to dedicated collectors.
