Look Sports Media – Marvel Rivals is diving headfirst into the zombie apocalypse with its brand-new Zombies mode, set to launch on October 23rd. This marks the game’s first official foray into Player vs. Environment (PvE) gameplay, drawing inspiration from the undead craze popularized by titles like Call of Duty, Overwatch, and even Fortnite.
Executive Producer at Marvel Games, Danny Koo, revealed that players will be able to embody iconic heroes like Thor, Blade, Magik, Jeff the Land Shark, and the Punisher, each equipped with unique abilities tailored for mowing down hordes of the undead. Prepare to face off against formidable bosses, including Zombie Namor and a special "Queen of the Dead" variant of Wanda Maximoff. This four-player co-op experience will be available across all platforms.

The echoes of zombie modes past are undeniable. Call of Duty: World at War ignited the trend back in 2008, with Treyarch’s Black Ops series solidifying the zombie horde mode as a gaming staple. Overwatch followed suit in 2016 with "Junkenstein’s Revenge," pitting players against waves of "Zomnics" in a Halloween-themed PvE event. Even Fortnite, before its battle royale dominance, began as a four-player zombie survival experience known as "Save the World."

While comparisons to Overwatch are inevitable, Marvel Rivals’ Zombies mode appears to be forging its own path. Unlike Overwatch’s limited hero selection, Marvel Rivals offers a wider range of playable characters. Furthermore, the focus seems to be shifting from defensive point holding to a more aggressive, ability-driven approach. This new mode will allow players to see how the heroes handle against the undead, giving players a new perspective on their abilities.
As Fortnite celebrates its Fortnitemares 2025 event, it’s hard to remember back to its 2017 release, but Fortnite actually started as a PvE zombie-horde experience.
