Phantom Thieves Invade Overwatch 2: Persona 5 Collab Skins Drop!

Look Sports Media – Blizzard Entertainment has finally unleashed the highly anticipated Overwatch 2 x Persona 5 collaboration, revealing a stylish new skin line based on the iconic JRPG, Persona 5. The collaboration, initially teased in the Overwatch 2 Season 18 trailer last month, is now fully unveiled as the "Overwatch 2 x Phantom Thieves" event. The official Overwatch Twitter account announced the drop with a dramatic reveal, promising players the chance to "show the world your true form."

Five heroes are receiving Persona 5-themed skins, including the newly introduced support hero, Wuyang. While the full roster of skins has been revealed, the lack of a Kiriko skin has sparked some online debate. Blizzard preemptively shared early concept art, showcasing the development process behind each skin design. However, the decision to give D.Va a Queen skin, rather than a more thematically appropriate Futaba skin, has drawn criticism from some Persona 5 fans. Futaba’s gamer persona and UFO-themed mech seem like a natural fit for D.Va, fueling the online discussion.

The skins are launching today, September 16th, though precise release times remain unconfirmed. Pricing is also yet to be officially announced, but speculation points towards a 2,800 Overwatch Coin price tag (approximately £23) for individual skins, with a bundle potentially costing 5,900 Overwatch Coins (approximately £46). This pricing aligns with previous crossover events like the G.I. Joe and Gundam Wing collaborations.

Overwatch 2’s history of successful crossovers extends beyond Persona 5, including eight Street Fighter 6 skins earlier this year. The game’s dedication to collaborations is evident, with leaked surveys hinting at future partnerships with a diverse range of games and anime franchises. A particularly surprising inclusion in the survey was League of Legends, alongside other potential collaborators like Disney (though the potential challenges of such a partnership are readily apparent).

This exciting crossover event is sure to be a hit with fans of both Overwatch 2 and Persona 5, though the ongoing debate surrounding skin choices promises to keep the community buzzing for some time to come. The question remains: will this collaboration be a critical success, or will the controversial choices overshadow the overall excitement? Only time will tell.
