TwitchCon: End of an Era? Assaults & Safety Concerns Explode

Look Sports Media – Another TwitchCon has concluded, but the aftermath is dominated by serious questions about the event’s future. Following a string of incidents involving assault, harassment, and security lapses at TwitchCon San Diego, a growing chorus of streamers and attendees are asking: Should TwitchCon even continue?

The debate gained significant momentum after popular streamer Emily Beth "Emiru" Schunk was assaulted during a meet and greet. This incident, coupled with other reports of harassment and discrimination, has ignited a fierce discussion about the safety and well-being of those attending the convention.

Emiru Assault Sparks Outrage

COLLABMEDIANET

The assault on Emiru, a prominent figure on Twitch, has become a focal point of the controversy. During her meet and greet, a man bypassed security measures, approached her, grabbed her, and attempted to kiss her. The incident has raised serious concerns about the effectiveness of security protocols at TwitchCon.

Emiru has confirmed that she is pursuing legal action against the individual. She also expressed disappointment in TwitchCon staff, stating that no one from the organization approached her to inquire about the incident or her well-being. She added that the assailant was allowed to leave the meet and greet area and was not apprehended until an hour after the attack.

Twitch CEO Dan Clancy has faced criticism for his response to the incident. In an interview, Clancy stated, "I do think that when you’re livestreaming, in many ways you can control your community." Many viewers interpreted this as shifting blame onto Emiru, leading to calls for his resignation.

Harassment and Objectification

Beyond the assault on Emiru, numerous streamers, particularly women, have reported instances of harassment and sexist behavior from other attendees, including fellow streamers.

Streamer N3on faced backlash for his inappropriate conduct towards content creator Emerome. After inviting her to his afterparty, he stated that she was invited "because you’re beautiful." When Emerome sarcastically responded with "I love being objectified," and walked away, N3on allegedly shouted derogatory remarks about her and her friend.

Following the event, N3on made disparaging comments about Emerome online, prompting her to reveal that she had been groomed and trafficked as a minor. looksports.media has reached out to representatives of N3on for comment on the interaction.

Other incidents, including a streamer rating women based on their perceived sexual appeal without their consent, have fueled calls for a ban on in-venue livestreaming. Concerns have also been raised about the use of covert recording devices, such as Meta Glasses.

Medical Discrimination

In addition to issues of harassment and assault, some attendees with medical conditions faced discrimination due to inconsistent enforcement of TwitchCon’s bag policy.

Two attendees with Type One Diabetes were forced to advocate for their right to carry bags containing essential medical supplies. One individual was forced to check their bag, separating them from life-saving medication.

Type One Diabetes is a lifelong autoimmune condition that requires constant monitoring and treatment. Individuals with the condition often require specific medications and equipment to manage their blood sugar levels. Preventing them from carrying these items poses a direct threat to their health.

Type One Diabetes is covered under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), which requires reasonable accommodations to be made for individuals with disabilities. The actions of TwitchCon San Diego staff may have violated the ADA.

A Recurring Pattern

The issues at TwitchCon San Diego are not isolated incidents. Similar problems have plagued previous TwitchCon events, including TwitchCon Rotterdam in June 2025, where numerous female creators reported being catcalled, groped, harassed, and stalked.

TwitchCon has also faced criticism for allowing streamers, particularly those from rival platform Kick, to harass other attendees for content. In 2024, UK streamer DBR666 was temporarily banned by Kick for inappropriate sexual behavior at TwitchCon.

Even as far back as 2022, streamers struggled to ensure their safety at TwitchCon. One streamer, Bx, revealed that TwitchCon failed to respond to her concerns about a stalker who confessed on a livestream that he planned to harm her at the event.

The Future of TwitchCon

In recent years, a growing number of streamers have announced that they will no longer attend TwitchCon events. Emiru recently confirmed that she will not be returning to TwitchCon following her assault. She joins QTCinderella and Valkyrae, who both publicly stated that they would not be attending TwitchCon San Diego due to safety concerns.

Emerome and PastaRavioli, who were involved in the interaction with N3on, were unable to attend the final day of TwitchCon due to security concerns, likely stemming from alleged death threats from members of N3on’s community.

With many streamers feeling unsafe, the future of TwitchCon is uncertain. A proactive, empathetic, and sincere approach from Twitch is essential to ensure the event’s survival.
