Exclusive: Charlton Athletic Close To Signing Swindon Town Player

Charlton Athletic are in negotiations to sign Swindon Town goalkeeper Lewis Ward on a free transfer with a medical expected shortly, sources have informed Look Sports Media. 

The 26-year-old is understood to be deep into negotiations with the League One side ahead of a potential move, however, whilst a deal is progressing it is not yet over the line. There will be no transfer fee involved due to the nature of the contract signed between Swindon and Ward. The goalkeeper rejoined on non-contract terms, meaning the League Two side are powerless to prevent him from leaving or to demand a fee.

Ward joined Swindon in 2021 following a successful trial, making his debut against Forest Green Rovers in October of the same year, keeping a clean sheet and saving a penalty. In September 2022 Sutton United signed the player for an undisclosed fee, but his contract was terminated in January 2022. He returned to Swindon Town to train, but could not resign due to a dispute in which Sutton were anticipating a fee for the player. He was eventually confirmed in August 2022.

This season, due to an injury to first-choice loan goalkeeper Murphy Mahoney in December, he started four League Two games before dropping to the bench again following the signing of Jack Bycroft.

Whilst a move is progressing nicely it is unknown at this stage when a deal could be confirmed a medical is expected today (15/01/23)

Ward has had a turbulent year, his move to Sutton United didn’t go to plan, for various reasons, and he was prevented from rejoining Swindon due to the dispute over his registration. After sitting patiently for his chance to re-sign for the club and then for a spot in the team, he was given it, but at the first opportunity, he was back on the bench.
